Biogas Study Tour of BV Dairy 15th June
This event is now over
We are running a Biogas Seminar and Study Tour to a recently commissioned high rate AD plant that is located on a dairy processing site and is feeding the power generated back to the factory. The BV Dairy on-site AD plant was commissioned in late 2010 and was handed over in March 2011. The feedstocks are trade effluent and co-products from their milk processing operations. The seminar sessions will also cover opportunities for AD on industrial sites and the production of biogas from smaller scale AD plants.
With highly informed speakers from across the Biogas industry the Seminar Session will cover the following topics.
-
The market for smaller scale AD in the UK
-
The BV Dairy experience and support from WRAP
-
An update on Feed in Tariffs and the RHI
-
Technical challenges of smaller scale AD plants
-
Energy generation and optimisation
-
Plant costs, financial modelling and funding support
-
Post digestion options and digestate standards
-
Planning / permitting / Environment Agency issues
The seminar will be held at the Coppelridge Hotel .

BV Dairy manufactures high value dairy products at Shaftesbury in North Dorset, using milk from the Blackmore Vale (Hardy’s Vale of the Little Dairies). With Clearfleau, BV Dairy secured WRAP funding* for this innovative on-site application of AD. The AD plant is reducing BV Dairy’s energy and effluent treatment costs. The BV Dairy project is a showcase site and demo facility for the UK food sector.
The innovative on-site digestion system designed by Clearfleau for BV Dairy offers a novel approach to industrial waste treatment. The system treats liquid processing effluents and handles substrates like sugars, oils and fats plus reject product or ingredients. Energy generated can be used in the factory and the technology can make a major contribution to the reduction in the carbon footprint of food processing.
Clearfleau’s process can be tailored to applications in dairy, drinks, food processing and other industrial sectors and the plant can be fitted on confined industrial sites. To feed the digester, effluent is pumped from the factory to the AD facility. It only takes effluent generated on site (no external feedstocks). Post treatment, cleansed effluent can be discharged to sewer at much reduced cost, with a load reduction of over 95%. The treatment process can also be extended to allow this to be recycled as grey water.
BV Dairy’s approach to generating energy from liquid effluents can be replicated across the food sector. At present, UK policymakers and the AD industry itself seem to be focused on the delivery of large scale centralised plants, with an electrical output of over 1MW. However, smaller scale AD plants, which treat waste and effluents (food waste, industrial wastes, farm manures or residues) where they are produced, enable the renewable energy to be used in production processes, replacing purchased fossil fuels.
The aim of the Seminar and plant tour is to provide a case study of smaller scale AD, plus background information about the BV Dairy project. The seminar will also inform participants on the latest technical and legislative situations regarding AD and biogas in the UK. We will also be looking at the policy framework for AD following the publication of the DEFRA report on their strategy for AD .
The plant tour will take approx 1 hour in total. The seminar sessions will be held 15 mins from the site. We anticipate large demand for this seminar and tour, booking early is advised. When booking please select your preferred tour time, early bird tours are available before the seminar sessions start.
* Note – Funding for BV Dairy’s on-site plant was provided under WRAP’s (Waste & Resources Action Programme) Environment Transformation Fund (ETF), supported by DECC (Department of Energy & Climate Change) and DEFRA (Department of Food and Rural Affairs).
