Asgard Biomass, provider of innovative and bespoke solutions to the biomass industry has designed and engineered a pellet store to integrate with a new high efficiency biomass heating system at St James Primary School, in Elstead, Surrey.

The £19,700 new pellet silo is an important part of a £46,000 scheme, jointly funded by EDF Energy’s Green Fund and the Low Carbon Buildings Programme, to enable the school to be heated sustainably by wood pellets, which will be sourced from local sawmills and heathland restoration projects.

Expert engineering was required to attach this purpose designed five tonne capacity silo and feeding mechanism to the wall structure of the 7 square metre loft above the school boiler room. This innovative solution involved the repositioning of a large water storage tank and its pipe work to ensure easy access and efficient use of the limited space available.

The high specification gravity fed store is now expected to handle approximately 8 tonnesof wood pellets a year supplied by Harvest Wood Fuels.

 “The bespoke design and meticulous engineering of Asgard Biomass, and its commitment to working closely with all relevant parties, has helped ensure the success of this pioneering project”, said Peter Richardson, from energy consultants ETA Energy Systems Ltd, project managers of the system.

The new biomass heating system is expected to generate approximately 40,000kWhof heat per annum and reduce carbon dioxide emissions of St James Primary School by 11.5 tonnes each year, so that pupils can now enjoy a greener and warmer winter.
