Agri-Gen starts construction of first Thoni Biogas Power Plant in UK

Building Site

Agri-Gen Ltd. have signed a contract with THÖNI for the first “Naturgas” biogas plant in the United Kingdom (UK). The companies jointly confirmthat construction has begun on the plant situated on a former USAF Base at Rendlesham in Suffolk.

The plant will initially generate 500 kWe, and will then implement a modular expansion to 2.5 MWein 2012.

Peter Hailes, CEO of Agri-Gen, stated the advantages of the THÖNI biogas technology: "As a large farming group, we are very excited about our forthcoming AD development. Not only will we utilise high availability, industrial standard AD technology, but will use off-graded vegetables and energy crops (grown in sustainable rotation) to produce diversified income through green electricity sales and by producing recycled fertiliser. We greatly look forward to working with THÖNI on our exciting, cutting edge development."

Dr. Robert Lackner, (UK project and sales manager for Thöni biogas plants) stated: “With the construction of the first Naturgas plant in UK Thöni have successfully entered the UK market. The market for biogas technology in UK is still young and offers considerable potential for future business development.”

Agri-Gen Ltd. Stems from a consortium of intensive arable farming companies based near Woodbridge, Suffolk. The company was set up to investigate renewable technologies that could provide onsite carbon neutral electricity, utilise a much needed break crop (such as Maize / Triticale), produce a sustainable transport fuel and recycle nutrients whilst incorporating valuable organic matter back into sandy suffolk soils. Clearly Anaerobic Digestion was the best fit technology and all shareholders are very excited about construction of a long term project that will provide a sustainable and profitable agricultural platform for future farming generations.
